"Skagen church built in 1841 as a replacement for what is known as the 'Sand covered' church which was eventually abandoned in 1795 after being constantly buried by drifting sand which had to be dug out every time the congregation needed to use the church.  Part of the church is still visible above ground ~2km SW of the town."
"The guys on the left were carrying out some sort of prank involving a bloke dressed up like a convict and a stuffed parrot.  The store on the right was where you could hire bicycles. "

Skagen, Denmark

(2nd June 2018)

Grenen peninsular

Skagen at the very tip of Denmark was our final stop before sailing back to Southampton and you can see why it is on a cruise itinery due to its location and also it is a very charming, 'different' place to visit after the hustle and bustle of the city stops we had had so far.

With the benefit of hindsight I think we missed a trick by not hiring some bicycles (at about £10 for the day each) and cycling up to Grenen peninsular where 'two oceans meet', i.e. the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.  A young family on our ship did just that and as there was very little to see in Skagen itself I think the day would have been more rewarding had we also done this.  At around 5 miles on a warm, sunny day with no hills to climb and very little traffic would have made it a very comfortable and enjoyable experience - perhaps next time.

And so after a pleasant, relaxing day we returned to the ship and prepared for our final couple of days on the Aurora on its journey to Southampton and home.
